The Secret Garden (5 stars) written by Frances Hodgson Burnett, is about a newly orphaned girl, Mary Lennox, going to live in a faraway mansion with her long lost uncle. The mansion is full of secrets, filled with rooms with strange things, unknown people, and of course, a Secret Garden. When Mary discovers the Secret Garden, she starts tending it, which changes her usually sour personality into a more pleasant one. Along the way, Mary makes new friends and changes her life. It was interesting to read about how secretive some people can really be, and what lengths they go to to keep their secrets safe.
I love this book too! I felt so sorry for Mary until she discovered the garden. When I was young I used to go around looking for a hidden garden because I wanted to be like Mary!
ReplyDeleteI got hooked on the movie and the book in elementary school. I confess that I often think of this book when I'm in a pastoral or scenic setting. I love fresh flowers (even though my husband says I have a "black thumb" instead of a "green thumb"), and I wish this Secret Garden really existed! Maybe someday I'll find it . . . (H.G. Well's "Door in the Wall" might be a more advanced read of the same type of idea)
