I just finished reading "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett. This book is the first by this author and offered an exceptional example of unique voicing and style. The book follows three female characters, one white and two black, through the civil rights struggle of the 1960s in Jackson, Mississippi. The silent but cruel ammunition of the wealthy white women keeps the black women from becoming successful, affluent working women. Because this story is told in three different voices, this reader became attached to the three women who fight against racial injustice in the South. Pick this book up today and find out the exact ingredient the confident Miss Minnie put in the pie she gave the evil Miss Hilly.
This is a fantastic book! I did not think I would enjoy it as much as I did. You never want it to end!
ReplyDeleteI agree. It's a great read to go along with our American Lit this year too-especially looking at the slave narratives. Not enough changed from 1860 to 1960.
